Baby's Perfect Skin

Perfect Skin

Does My Baby Need Sunscreen?

Dr. Benabio, in The Dermatology Blog, reminds us that babies’ skin is perfect
but very sensitive to the sun.

“Baby skin is thinner, has less natural moisturizers and has fewer pigment cells,
making it more vulnerable to the environment than adult skin.

This is important especially in summer.

Studies have shown that up to 83% of babies get sunburned
their first year of life.

This is our fault, not theirs.”

Tips To Keep Your Baby Safe This Summer

1. Newborns up to 6 months should be kept out of the sun.
Cover them up with light clothing and hats,
and put the top down on the stroller.

2. Babies 6 months and older should not be exposed to the sun
between 10am and 2pm. When they are outdoors,
they should have sunscreen on all exposed skin.
Because their immature skin can absorb chemicals more easily,
choose sunscreens with zinc and titanium
with an SPF of 30 or more.

3. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen near their hairline, on their ears,
and at the edges of clothing.

Choose sunscreens that are white or opaque;
it’s easier to see where you’ve applied the sunscreen,
and he’ll look cute anyway.

Ageless Elaine has babies on her mind.

We’re expecting our first grandbaby in October!

Avoid the Sun

Brighten Up!

Did You Know?

Age spots aren’t caused by age.

They are caused by the sun.

“Sunshine is an attack on the skin, and one way the skin defends itself is to make pigment,” explains Ranella Hirsch, M.D., a cosmetic dermatologist in Cambridge, MA, and president-elect of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology & Aesthetic Surgery. If a patient is skeptical about her spots being solar related, Dr. Hirsch asks her to move her bra over a quarter of an inch to expose the skin that the sun never hits. “And then she sees what I mean,” she says. “If these changes really came from aging, you’d have them all over.”

How Can Med Spas Help?

1.     Light-based treatments: Lasers and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL or Photo Facials). Most of the time, several treatment sessions are necessary.

2.     Chemical Peels

3.     Skin Care Products to use at home

Bonus

Many of the treatments will also help with wrinkles!
I love a combination of Photo Facials and Chemical Peels.
And, of course, my Retin A.

The South Beach Symposium

What Not To Do

Pigment is The New Wrinkle

Wrinkles make you look old.

So do brown or age spots.

The doctors at the Symposium talked about this issue quite a bit.

(Of course, you do have to wonder why cosmetic dermatologists
choose to have their Symposium at the beach…)

Med Spas Can Peel Away Summer Sun Damage

Time for a Peel?

I love peels.

Chemical peels

  • help even out skin tone

  • get rid of dark patches from the sun

  • rejuvenate your skin

What’s not to love?

Laura LoCricchio in the Detroit Spa Examiner says:

“Make sure that you are going to a licensed professional
that has experience in a variety of chemical peels.
Not all chemical peels are the same.
Chemical peels range from light to deep
and there are peels for specific skin issues
from acne to sun-damage.

To see real improvement in the skin
medical grade peels are the best.
Most peels have minimum downtime
and are spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart.
A series is always recommended for best results.
If your looking for a great way to improve tone,
texture, minimize sun-damage and fine lines and wrinkles
chemical peels might be the right choice for you.”
